Entrepreneurs, founders and business owners in Maryland who want to establish a commercial presence in the United Kingdom should distinguish between business travel and a route that permits them to live and work in the UK. Attending certain meetings or permitted business activities as a visitor is different from running a UK business as a resident.
The Innovator Founder visa is the principal route for qualifying founders who want to establish and develop an innovative business in the UK. The business concept must meet the route’s requirements for innovation, viability and scalability and must receive endorsement from an approved endorsing body. The applicant must also meet the other immigration requirements, including English-language and maintenance requirements where applicable.
A strong business immigration case should connect the immigration evidence to a credible commercial plan. Founders may need to explain the product or service, market need, competitive difference, growth strategy, management role and plans for national or international expansion. An endorsement is a central part of the Innovator Founder process, but it does not remove the need to satisfy the immigration rules.
Business owners in Maryland should also consider whether another route is more appropriate, particularly where the main purpose is employment with an existing UK company rather than launching an endorsed venture. Older routes such as the Start-up and Tier 1 Entrepreneur visas are closed to new applicants, although legacy status may still be relevant in limited cases.
Because business decisions can involve significant cost, applicants should align company formation, investment, relocation and dependant planning with the immigration route before committing funds. Requirements can change, so current Home Office guidance should be checked before an application is submitted. A well-prepared application should match the selected route and be supported by consistent evidence.
